Basil has a lot of essential oils such as methylchavicols, linalools, eugenols, organic acid, saponin, tannin, flavonoid, vitamins C and B. It is believed that if you put a stem of the herb in your pocket it is an omen for profit or loyalty. In ancient Rome  Basil was given as a sign of affection.
